Occupying an entire strip mall L-shaped building painted bright purple and yellow with a mural of Kobe? Everything tasted like they were fried moments before we bit into them, which they were. The folks at Don's fry their food fresh with every order, and you can tell by how juicy and not-mushy the fish is. The hush puppies had a good crisp but avoided being too dense on the inside. The fries were as good as fries get. The tartar sauce was not cloying, and the hot sauce struck the delicate balance between hot, tangy, sour, just diluted enough to match the fish but not too runny. One constructive criticism: they bread their fish like one would bread fried chicken, and it's a bit thick for the more delicate meat. I would suggest they experiment with a slightly lighter breading for their seafood, especially since they go through the trouble of offering fresh snapper, catfish, oysters, etc The whole operation is a Korean American family business, based on the conversation I overheard in the language. I was disappointed to not find any Soju or Korean snacks beyond ramen, but maybe that doesn't sell at the border of Long Beach and Compton. ”
